Autonomic Nervous System

Autonomic nervous system: The autonomic nervous system controls and integrates the functions of internal organs like the heart, blood vessels, glands, etc., which are not under the control of our will. The autonomic nervous system has two subdivisions: sympathetic and parasympathetic. The organs receive both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. The two types of nerves have opposite effects on the organs, i.e., if one is stimulatory, the other is inhibitory.

Two type of autonomic nervous system are  :

Sympathetic  nervous system  Parasympathetic Nervous system
Involved in fight or flight response. Involved in maintaining homeostasis and also, permits the rest and digest response.
The sympathetic system prepares the body for any potential danger. The parasympathetic system aims to bring the body to a state of calm.
Sympathetic system has shorter neuron pathways, hence a faster response time.  Have comparatively longer neuron pathways, hence a slower response time.
